What Do These Following TSH Levels Indicate?

2015 lab result for TSH level was 0.050 u[iU]/mL. 2014 lab result for TSH level was 0.503 MU/L. Is one based on 100ths (or 1000ths) and the other not? In other words, are these virtually the same number, just need to move the decimal over one place? thank you!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
Incomplete data: Age, gender, levels of T3, T4 any drug intake or associated medical illness, etc.

The normal level of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) is 0.4-4.2 microunits per milliliter (mcU/mL) or 0.4-4.2 milliunits per liter (mU/L).

The units mentioned in your result are virtually the same.

Interpretations of the TSH level depends upon the level of thyroid hormone; therefore, the TSH is usually used in combination with other thyroid tests such as the T4 and T3.

The given TSH levels are low & which may be caused by:

1. An overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) as seen in Graves' disease, a type of goiter (toxic multinodular goiter), or a noncancerous (benign) tumor called a toxic nodule.
2. Taking too much thyroid hormones for treatment of an under active thyroid gland (hypothyroidism)
3. Pregnancy during the first trimester.

You need to be examined by a doctor and a detailed thyroid function tests, etc should be done.

Hope I could answer your query.
