What Do White Bumps In Mouth Of An Infant Indicate?

My four day old newborn has a few little white bumps inside her mouth--two on her gums and two on the roof of her mouth. They look like little pimples or cysts. She appears to be in pain when breastfeeding and so we have been pumping and feeding her Mom s colostrum from a spoon. Her pediatrician will see her tomorrow, but in the mean time is there any way to determine whether these white spots are thrush or Epstein pearls? If so is there any way to soothe the pain so she can feed directly from the breast? Thank you for your help.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of white bumps in mouth of an infant which seems to be oral thrush . It is fungal infection of mouth which occur due to many reasons like weakened immunity. Need not to worry. These are very common in children and usually harmless. I would suggest you to maintain proper oral hygiene by cleaning area with damp swab.

If condition still persist then consult dentist /oral pathologist for proper examination and treatment. Give child lots of water.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.

Best wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
