What Do You Suggest For BPD When On Olanzapine?

My son (19 yrs) is diagnosed with BPD. Initially he was given 40 mg of Olanzapine (5 months back). Now the same is at10 mg. But even now he remains in bed for 11-12 hrs, though Doctor has reduced the medicine from 12.5 mg to 10 mg 1 fortnight ago. Please help in guiding me how he can be coercerd / cajoeled to go back to his normal routine of going to college etc.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for using healthcare magic

This is very common side effect with olanzapine. In your son case, it has over-sedation with olazapine. In case of over-sedation due to olanzapine, it would better to either shift to another antipsychotic like aripiprazole or add with olanzapine before reducing it dose. Rest you can discuss with his psychiatrist.

Thanks
