What Do You Suggest For A Sore Tongue With Swollen Taste Buds?

This afternoon I noticed that the inside of my upper lip is starting to swell and the back of my tongue is sore. The taste buds seem swollen and has a few small red spots. I noticed that it hurt my tongue to swallow earlier and now is slightly worse. I'm wondering if it is something I should get checked out?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post can be due to:
1. Deficiency of certain essential vitamins and minerals in diet.
2. Eating very hot spiced or salty food. Trauma due to injury or biting can also cause swollen taste buds.
3. Exposure to insecticides, alcohol, tobacco.
4. Allergies to certain food products.
5. Acid reflux disease.
6. Tongue ulcers, oral thrush, etc.

Management involves:
1. Treating the underlying cause
2. Pantoprazole preparations
3. Avoidance of stress
4. Dietary modifications
5. Multivitamin & mineral supplementation

If symptoms still persist...it will be better to consult an ENT specialist.
Meanwhile...avoid taking hot food & drinks, maintain adequate hydration & take soft, non-spicy foods.

Wish you good health.
Take care.
