What Does this CT Scan Result Mean?

Hello Doctor. Last week my mothers(Age65yrs) abdomen and Pelvis scan was done. The final Impression of CT scan report says Both the kidneys shows cortical scarring. Calcification in upper pole of right kidney measuring 9mm could represent a sloughed papilla. No hydronephrosis is seen. Minimal free fluid is seen Can you please explain me what does this means?

Cortical scarring in both kidneys usually indicate past infections in the kidneys. This may be due to tuberculosis or non-tubercular bacteria. Calcification of 9 mm can indicate a sloughed papilla which is again a result of old infection. Now this does not necessarily mean significant damage, but it should be evaluated.
Small free fluid in abdomen is often of no consequence in young women, however, considering your mother's age, I would suggest an evaluation for the reason. Free fluid in abdomen can be a result of multiple reasons.
I would suggest visiting a nephrologist to evaluate for any problem with kidney function or current infection. It usually begins with a routine blood and urine examination. I hope this helps.
