What Does 15% Ejection Fraction Mean?

My father in law has been told he can t drive anymore by his cardiologist because of a 15% ejection fraction. I believe, if I understand correctly, that an EF that low means a high risk of sudden death. Is that correct? My father-in-law is livid, as we have physically taken his keys away from him. Were we wrong to do that?

HI
Thanks for posting your query to Healthcaremagic.

Ejection fraction is the amount of blood pumped into the body from the heart . 15% means the heart pumps on 15% of the blood it receives into the body . This value is very low and yes he is at risk of Sudden Cardiac death .

It is for that reason only he has been advised not to drive because any cardiac event while driving can make him unconscious leading to accidents . You are right in restricting him for Driving .

Hope this answers your query.
