Hi I am a dialysis patient and I retain fluid in my tissue. He said it was called 3rd spacing in the tissue. Is this correct and what exactly is 3rd spacing for a dialysis patient? I go to the hospital about every 4 months to have excess fluid removed with Abumin. Please explain 3rd spacing in the tissue for me.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Third space means space between cells. And fluid in lung cavities and fluid in abdomen as pleural effusion and Ascites are also called third space fluids. It is just medical terminology. In kidney patient when excess fluid cannot be removed from blood then fluid starts accumulating between spaces around cells so generalized swelling plus lung space so respiratory distress and fluid in abdomen as Ascites. When dialysis is on it removes fluid from blood and then excess fluid from third space starts seeping into blood.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
