What Does 5 Mm Nodule At The Right Anterior First Rib On An X-ray Indicate?

Hi Doctor(s), I just had and anterior and lateral x-rays as part of employment because of positive PPD. The radiologist read as a 5 mm nodule at the right anterior first rib. I was a former smoker for 1/2 PPD for 25 years. I will be seeing my HCP tomorrow. What could this be? Thank your for your prompt response. Ray of Long Island, New York

Welcome to health care magic.

1.The possibilities of the bony lesion can be bony island - which does not need any intervention other than follow-up.
2.If this lesion is in the lung the possible cause could be localised alveolar opacities due to infection / inflammation.
3.For which if symptomatic a course of antibiotic will be fine.
4.The other possibilities can be old healed granulomas which remains for longer and does not need any further treatment.
5.If you are symptomatic, for confirmative HRCT - high resolution computer tomography will be definitive. And a followup x-ray.

Good luck.
Hope i have answered your query,
any thing to ask ? do not hesitate to ask.

Welcome to health care magic.

1.If the lesion is in the lung and calcified then it is a old healed granulomas.
2.If its nodule - needs further evaluation with a HRCT - high resolution computer tomography.
3.That will evaluate and characterise the lesion - with its margins and adjacent structures involvement.
4.Even in the bony lesions CT will give better information - a contrast study will even gives further information.
5.Main aim of further evaluation is to rule out the possibilities of malignancies.

Good luck.
