What Does A Brown Patch On Left Hand Middle Finger Indicate?

I have a brown patch on my left hand middle finger going from the to my finger nail almost all the way. There is a bit on my ring just a little spot on the side of the nail. It s only on that one hand, no where else and it doesn t hurt. What could it be ?
