What Does A Brown Vaginal Discharge During Pregnancy Indicate?

I am pregnant and I had a little brown discharge spotting the past couple of day. I went in today to have a vaginal ultrasound and since then have been bleeding a little. This time, it is a dark red color. My MD said this is normal, but I am still afraid. Could I be misscarrying?
