Hi,
Thank you for your query.

It is highly likely you have Bartholin duct cyst.

The Bartholin’s glands are located both sides (approximately 4-o’clock and 8-o’clock positions) on the posterior-lateral aspect of the vaginal orifice. The glands produce mucus to lubricate the vagina and open just outside of humenal ring. Obstruction of these ducts leads to cystic dilation of the Bartholin’s duct while the gland itself remains unchanged.

The treatment depends on the size of cyst and symptoms that you are experiencing. If the cyst is still small (1 to 2 cm) and you are experiencing mild symptoms, it can be managed with sitz baths -sitting in a warm water tube several times a day for three or four days. Even small infected cyst may be treated with sitz baths that eventually rupture and drain on its own.
If the cyst is quite large and you are experiencing severe symptoms such as severe exquisite pain and tenderness it is highly possible the cyst got infected. Any infected cyst should be treated with surgery (incision and drainage).

If you are over 40 years and having the first time the cyst you should contact your health care provider for a biopsy.

I hope all of the above information will help you manage your condition. Please, feel free to ask me more in HCM if there is anything else you need to know.

Thank you,
Dr.Malik
