What Does A Lump On Base Of Neck Indicate?

My daughter is a college sophomore. In the last few hours, a lump has come up on her right shoulder at the base of her neck...just above sports bra strap...it looks like half a golf ball sitting on her shoulder/neck. The health center is closed, so she spoke to the nurse hotline and they told her to ice it and take advil and go in tomorrow, but there are no appointments available until Wednesday. She was in a car accident a week ago and required EMS transport to ER for leg injury. Over the weekend she started complaining of painful knot on her back right above waist. Tonight she has the new lump on her neck. Thoughts?

Hi,

A lump on the base of the neck can have several causes, including swollen lymph nodes, cysts, abscesses, lipomas (benign fatty tumors), or rare instances of cancer. Swollen lymph nodes are a common cause of lumps on the neck and can be due to a variety of reasons, including infection, inflammation, or cancer. The lump may be tender or painful, and the surrounding area may be red or warm.

Cysts are another possibility and are often filled with fluid or pus. They can be caused by blockages in the oil glands or hair follicles in the skin. Abscesses are similar to cysts but are usually larger and more painful. They are filled with pus and require medical attention to prevent complications.

Lipomas are usually benign fatty tumors that can develop anywhere in the body. They are usually painless and do not require treatment unless they grow too large or become bothersome. Given the recent car accident and her leg injury, it is possible that the lump on the base of her neck could be related to the accident or could be a separate issue. She must seek medical attention as soon as possible to determine the cause of the lump and to receive appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

Your daughter has a lump on the right shoulder at the base of her neck. She has history of car accident. Such a lump may be indicative of muscle knot, also called myofascial trigger points. Most often, they are found on the neck and shoulders. It can also be due to trauma, injury(separation, fracture), muscle contusion, cyst (bone, epidermal, ganglion, etc.), lipoma, etc.

Other medical conditions that can cause this are thyroid nodules, goiter, cancer, etc. Your daughter is suggested to take analgesic, one stat after food. She is advised to get clinically examined by a GP, she may be refereed to an ENT. She should get done all the required blood works, investigations (imaging tests) so that the pathology can be diagnosed and so that she can be treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
