What Does A Painful And Swollen Red Rash Above The Lips Indicate?
I developed a red circular swollen bite looking mark above my lip. I thought it was just a pimple, so I put on some acne cream and now it really hurts and stings and itches. Do you think I should go to urgent care or what would be a good remedy to try to get it to soothe tonight? Susan Larson
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of painful and swollen red rash above the lips which is mainly due to allergic reaction and it is leading to perioral dermatitis.
Need not to worry. I would suggest you to apply ice on these rashes and apply topical erythromycin based ointment. For now you should take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain and swelling. Drink plenty of fluids. You should not touch or prick area as it can exaggerate your symptoms. You should consult dermatologist for proper examination and to find out exact cause. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics (amoxicillin) for a week.
Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
