What Does A Popping Sound In The Ear Indicate?

For a couple days I have a deep popping sound in my right ear. Not painful, nor does it seem to have affected hearing. But a bout will come on once or twice a day for 20-40 minutes, with 10-20 pops at about 2/sec., then a brief pause for 20-30 sec. then start again. Suggestions?

Hello Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Thanks for your query.

Understanding your concern. The popping sound in ear is common problem .This occur due to Eustachian tube dysfunction (tube that connects back of the throat to middle ear).It usually maintain pressure of ear and drain excess liquid in middle ear into throat.

Sometimes due to infection of upper respiratory track ( common cold ), sinusitis and throat infection it gets block and looses its function and fluid get accumulated ,which giver popping sound .

Treatment of such condition depends upon treatment of underlying cause like infection in throat and sinus .

I would suggest you to take steam 2-3 times a day ,do warm saline rinses several times a day and use over the counter decongestants .

You should also consult ENT specialist (ear, nose ,throat) for proper evaluation to rule out other condition like middle ear infection and to find out whats the exact cause .Doctor may prescribe antibiotics course for infection and steroids therapy.

Hope i have answered your question , If you have any further question I will be happy to help.

Best Wishes,
