What Does A Red Line From The Wrist To The Armpit Indicate?

Red line from wrist to armpit. About 11/2 inches wide and changing to a slim red line to the armpit. I have a flare up of gout at the moment. (Left foot). Not sure what the red line us though. It does not itch and is not uncomfortable. I am 76 years old female. Don t drink alcohol at all but am a bit overweight.

These are typical signs of lymphangitis which is bacterial infection of lymph chanels in arm and this is not uncommon after bites or injuries.

If there is just clear redness then you should not be concerned but if there is pus discharge, fever, then it may indicate more severe inflammation and you may need antibiotics. Also if pain is progressive you should do lab findings to rule out blood poisoning.

Till this, you should rest, apply cold compresses, keep arm elevated and take nonsteroid painkillers such as ibuprofenum or Diclofenac.

It is however expected that symptoms may persist even for up to5 days but just watch for these signs that I have mentioned and if these occur, go to ER to have intravenous antibiotics.
