What Does A Shadow In The Dental X-ray Indicate?

Hello. My nanny went to the dentist and had a x ray. When they came back they said rgey found a shadow on her gums and has now been referred to hospital for morw x rays in a few days time. I was just wondering what this could be as I am worried. Thank you

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

Shadows in X ray can be due to many reasons.

(i) It can be due to an affected root of the tooth.
(ii) There can be bone destruction showing abnormal shadows.
(iii) Bone cysts in the region can also appear as shadows.
(iv) Loosened teeth can also cause shadows due to malpositioning an misalignment.

The correct reason for shadows can be known only by taking a look at the X ray. Please discuss with her dentist.
