What Does A Swollen Lump On The Index Finger Indicate?
I haves swollen little knot on my top joint of my right index finger after a small cut or scrape. I have been covering it with a bandaid and keeping antibiotic ointment on it. It does not seem to be reducing but not growing much if at all. Do I need to try something else?
After trauma, initially there is soft tissue swelling then fibrosis occurs. This refers to the formation of scar tissue. It can be felt like a lump in the affected area.
Scar tissue can improve, but it can take a long time in some cases.
If there is no large open cut/lesion then there is no need to keep it covered because this would not help. If there is a minor or superficial cut then it is also best that it is uncovered because this aids in healing once it can be kept relatively clean.
You can continue the topical antibiotic if there is an open cut but if there is none then this would not help with scar/fibrosis.
The use of anti inflammatory pain killers, even if there is no pain, may help reduce the body's inflammatory response and aid in resolution eg naproxen, cataflam, ibuprofen
I hope this helps
