What Does A Swollen Vein Over The Rib Indicate?

Swollen vein going over rib. I know it happened after falling asleep in a chair over the arm rest. It s not visible and only can be felt with fingers. Been there for a week. No pain except where it crosses the lower rib and when pressed. Pain is mild.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I would like to suggest firstly, it should be confirmed whether it is a really swollen vein or something else.

I would like to ask you:

1. Do you feel heartburn/acidity?
2. Do you have difficulty in swallowing?
3. Is there pain when you touch the bulge?
4. Is there any pain during swallowing or breathing?

Considering it as a vein, sometimes, clot occurs within the vein and portion bulges.

Also, suspect Diaphragmatic Hernia. I will investigate both the above and give you some tests to do.

I also suggest you have these tests:

1.Doppler ultrasonography
2.Chest CT
3. Complete Blood Routine

Please, I suggest you do these above tests and please post another question with the test result. Any doctor here in HCM can follow you up.

Do not worry, there are ample of treatments available.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dipan Samanta, General & Family Physician
