What Does Abdominal Pain On The Right Side Indicate?

I am having pain on the right side of my abdomen directly under my right breast. I have had it before and it usually lasts at least 2 days goes away and then comes back. It has nothing to do with exercising and most of the time its there when I wake up. It hurts when I cough or clear my throat. Because it comes and goes I have not seen my doctor yet, although I do have a scheduled appt on next week.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

By your history and description, possibility of pleurisy (inflammation of pleura) is more likely. Your pain is associated with coughing. So pleuritic pain is more likely. So get done chest x ray to rule out causes of pleurisy. If chest x ray is normal then no need to worry much. Take simple painkiller like Paracetamol or Ibuprofen. Apply warm water pad on affected areas of chest. Don't worry, you will be alright with all these but get done chest x ray.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
