What Does An Altered Sense Of Smell Indicate?

Sometimes when I breathe in through my nose I smell an odor but I realized it s not in the room that I m in it s actually the act of breathing in through my nose because I smell it in different places ... mainly when I m lying down or sitting ...what could that mean?
