What Does An Enlarged Spleen Indicate?

My son went through chemo in 2006 when he was 3 he finished chemo in 2010. He has been to his oncologist this yr and all is good but he is having horrible spleen pain. He went to the er once a couple yrs ago about his spleen and was told he has an enlarged spleen and that his body is trying to fight off an infection. Is there anything to relieve the pain and should I be worried that his leukemia is back

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

An enlarged spleen does not necessarily mean that his leukemia is back, however, it would be a good idea for him to see an oncologist for an evaluation to make sure. Spleens are difficult because they cannot be biopsied like other organs. He may need an MRI or CT of the spleen to determine the cause of enlargement. In any case, with his history of leukemia, he needs to see an oncologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
