What Does An Infiltrate On Left Side Of The Lung Indicate?

I started out with pleurisy pain - very severe - then the walk-in clinic did a chest x-ray - said I had pneumonia. After 3 rounds of anti-biotics - lungs were clear, but pleurisy still there. Then was sent for a CT scan. They said I had an infiltrate on my left side of lung. Now have an apptm t with pulmonologist. Pleurisy still there, better, but still can t take a BIG DEEP BREATH without it hurting. I feel fine in all other respects. Obviously, worried because Dr. said, we want to rule out cancer . I do not smoke and otherwise healthy (age 67)

Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
Cancer happens to be one of the common causes of pleural effusion(pleurisy). However, there are many possible causes depending on the nature of the fluid in the preural cavity.Possible causes may include:
-A viral infection, such as the flu (influenza)
-A bacterial infection, such as pneumonia
-A fungal infection
-Rheumatoid disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis
-Certain medications
-Lung cancer near the pleural surface
-Or it may just be a transudate effusion
I will suggest you take the CT scan first. From the results, the exact cause will be known and treatment options will be discussed.Your Doctor may also request for pleural fluid analysis and culture if need be.Just calm.
Hope this will help
Best regards
