What Does An Itchy Rash On The Back Indicate?

My husband has an area on his mid-back that is about the size of a quarter. It is pinkish on one side and darker pink on the other. It itches and there is a slightly raise (lump?) beneath all of it. When he pressed the area against the door jam to scratch it, he said it felt a sharp pain. It s been itchy for a while, but this is the first time he s felt pain when he tries to scratch it. Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

If the swelling size is more and is causing you more pain then you can get it always removed.

But since you say it is the only rash which is there so I guess no medical attention is required.

If it is spreading then it will be allergic rash. If it is not then I think you don't have to worry at all.

I think putting antibiotic lotions or creams is out of scope for your problems.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Archana
