What Does An "under Developed,elongated Sac" In Pregnancy Indicate?

Hi,
My wife is 6 weeks pregnant via IVF, and we went to do our first ultrasound today, but it showed an underdevloped,elongated sac and we were told we have to wait 2 weeks to do another ultrasound. We are very disappointed, and are thinking the worse ....from what we googled, we just have to wait the 2 weeks to see, but is the elongated sac a 'death sentence'?

Hello,
A regular outlined gestation sac indicates a healthy pregnancy even before the fetal pole and fetal heart can be made out. I am sorry to say, elongated sac has to be viewed with caution and the fact that it does not correspond to the dates, makes it even more suspicious. Yet, hope is not lost as the contours can be made out more clearly along with fetal pole and fetal cardiac activity in later sonograms in many cases. So, please hope for the best as you wait for your next sonogram. Hope this helps.
