What Does Annular Tear At L5-S1 With Focal Disc Protrusion Mean?
Can you please tell me what this means? "On the scout images, counting from the C2 vertebra, 5 lumbar vertebrae are identified. Normal lordosis seen. The conus ends normally at L1 level. The visualized lower cord and bone marrow signals are normal. The vertebral body heights are maintained. There is a hemangioma seen within the L2 vertebral body.
There is moderate disc space narrowing with desiccation and Modic type II changes at L5-S1 level. There is annular tear with moderate sized central protrusion that is seen to abut the right traversing S1 nerve root within the lateral recess with possible compression. No central canal or neuroforaminal stenosis seen. The remainder of the levels are within normal limits.
IMPRESSION: at L5-S1 level there is an annular tear with a moderate focal disc protrusion centrally with slight right paracental extension. This causes abutment with possible compression to the right S1 nerve root."
