What Does Blood In Sputum Suggest?

when I wake during the night to use the bathroom and happen to spit there s traces of blood. This never happens during the day. When I try bringing up any flem from my throat there s no sign of blood.I m on no pain and I m wondering if it could be some kind of cancer

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query . The condition of blood in sputum is known as hemoptysis. There are wide number of reasons that can cause that kind of condition. Following are thereasons
- Infection of lung or respiratory track.
- Any trauma to throat or respiratory track .
- Dryness of throat and respiratory track ( in mouth breathers usually at night)
- Acid reflux.
- Lung cancer.

I would suggest you to consult doctor/ ENT specialist (ear ,nose,throat) for proper evaluation and treatment . Doctor may order blood tests , X-ray , CT scan sputum culture and other vital to find out the exact cause . Doctor may prescribe antibiotic course along with other medicines depending upon the cause .

For now maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing twice a day and do antiseptic mouthwash rinses (listrine) , because sometimes blood in oral cavity comes from gum problem like gingivitis.
