What Does Blood In Stool Indicate?

Hi, over the last week I have seen blood with my stool, and through out the course of the day, I have a heavy feeling in my chest, I have pain and discomfort in my lower back which extends around like a belt, my right leg more than the left feels heavy and I feel like I am floating when I am walking. I am also having severe heartburn and most times I eat the food comes up in the back of my throat and sometimes it burns. I feel like I am falling apart!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I would like to tell you that you are suffering from a number of health problems. Firstly the blood in stool could be a sign of haemorrhoids which needs further investigation. If you are suffering from chronic constipation it may lead to hemorrhoids.

You need to get yourself checked by a surgeon as soon as possible. He will perform an anoscopy and depending on the result of examination will suggest whether you require surgery or not. He may also advise a colonoscopy to rule out other causes.

Regarding the heartburn, it is due to gastroesophageal reflux disease. You should avoid oily and spicy food. Also avoid processed foods and caffeine.

Do not eat anything two hours before going to sleep. Raise the head end of your bed with the help of two pillows. Take an antacid like pantoprazole on empty stomach twice daily for some days. If the problem persists consult a gastroenterologist for further treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nazma Amman
