What Does Blood In Stool Indicate?

I was given a kit to take home to give a stool sample....I was surprised to find out there is blood in my stool...I do not see any blood in my stool or on TP....I have had two colonoscopies I am almost 65...the results were fine. What are the symptoms of colon disease? If I do not see blood could this mean what ever it is has been caught early?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The blood would be classified as occult blood since it is not visible to the naked eye. If you had a colonoscopy within the past 5 years with a normal result, it is unlikely that the blood is due to a malignant lesion since those take a number of years to grow and changes would have been seen then.Other causes of blood in the stool include infection, trauma, inflammation of the colon (colitis) etc.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
