What Does Bouts Of Severe Coughing Triggered While Eating Suggest?

94 yo non-smoking father is prone to bouts of severe coughing apparently triggered while eating. Various tests and diagnoses have not resulted in clear identification of a specific problem and treatment. One explanation spoke about epiglotis problem and another spoke about weakness in the trachea or oesophagus walls. Another just referred to his age. What aspects of aging are likely to be factors in this situation?

Hi there.

He could be having Acid reflux disease which is a common cause of oropharyngeal dysphagia. He shoukd not lie down for atleast half an hour after consuming food or fluid. Avoid spicy, oily, junk food, smoking, alcohol, colas. He should consume plenty of curds, green leafy vegetables, drink 1-2 litres of water daily. Get shown to a Gastroenterologist for proper diagnosis and can do the upper GI endoscopy to confirm according to your Doctor's requests.
