What Does Breathing Difficulty In A Child Indicate?

My daughter complains that she can t breathe occasionally and she is on the autism spectrum so I have always thought it was anxiety. However, I listened to her chest, just put my ear to it and her heart was beating rapidly so I went to get my phone to time it but by the time I did it the first bit was fast but the end was back to a normal heart beat. What do you suppose this could be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Shortness of breath can be due to issues with the heart, lungs, anemia, infections, other systemic causes or anxiety as you mentioned.

Normally issues with the heart and lungs are ruled out first by a careful history , examination and investigations if these are thought to be necessary.

Blood tests can be done to rule out anemia.Low hemoglobin would cause shortness of breath and increased heart rate.

I hope this helps
