What Does Brown Vaginal Discharge Indicate?

Hi. So i have been having Light to dark brown discharge for about a week and a half now. It started at the beginning of my period which i thought was normal. But i never got my period, instead i got just this brown discharge. And it did not go away, i still have it now about 5 days after when my period would have ended. Took a pregnancy test and it came back negative. Any suggestions on what it might be would be great.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is most likely due to hormonal imbalance. An ovarian cyst could be the culprit. If so, these functional cysts will usually go away in a couple of months. I recommend:
-An ob-gyn consult as you are still spotting
-Blood tests (beta hcg levels, thyroid function tests
-An ultrasound of the pelvis.
These will give us a better idea as to what's happening. If you have severe abdominal pain, fever, heavy vaginal bleed, go to the emergency room right away.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
 Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
