What Does Burning Sensation During Urination Indicate?

I had a Pap smear last Tuesday, which I hadn t had in 5 yrs--I am now post menopausal. On Wed and Thurs of last week, I felt a burning kind of sensation while just sitting at work and also when urinating (I sit for long periods)--I know that I was at least partially dehydrated as well. Then on Friday night I started having blood in my urine--more than just spotting--at some point I passed a small clot--I was shaking a lot at one point and could not get warm, but no fever. I had to get out of bed numerous times to void that night, which caused a stinging sensation thru out my whole body. I took Advil and went to bed and was feeling better--but only after drinking 64 ozs. of water in a short period--trying to flush things out. I was fine all Friday day and night, and now on Saturday afternoon: the bleeding has ceased but I sense that I can t completely empty my bladder and when I do so I have an uncomfortable throbbing feeling down there (I m still drinking lots of water). I m trying to hold off going to the ED but I don t want to wait too long...What do you recommend?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, thanks for your query in HCM.
Coming to your concern, burning urination, blood stained or clot in the urine, pain lower abdomen, chills/shivering indicates few things like severe urinary tract infection, urinary calculi , renal calculi.
Doing test like Urine routine examination, culture and sensitivity, ultrasound of lower abdomen and pelvis will give a clear picture of the condition.
Drinking plenty of oral fluids might help the condition to some extent.
Do not hold when you have the urge to pass urine. Frequently emptying the bladder will reduce bacterial load on the bladder.
Medicines like antispasmodic, Citralka syrup will relieve the pain and burning sensation if it is only urinary tract infection.
Take care.
