What Does Burning Sensation In The Stomach Indicate?

Mom started out with burning in her stomach. She drank some green tea, and within an hour was vomiting. Gave her some hot water, and now is coughing, gagging, and has a lot of phlegm. She has been trying to go to sleep for the past 4 hours, but keeps on coughing. She is 73 years old.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Her symptoms are nonspecific, but these may be suggestive of gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or hiatal hernia. So she should do gastroscopy to evaluate it more accurately. It is caused by irritation of stomach mucosa by certain food or medications, stress, and smoking. So firstly it should be treated with home remedies and changing dietary habits.

We need to avoid fried food, carbonated drinks, coffee, alcohol, and spicy food. She should eat more milk products, vegetables, and boiled food. Also, certain antiacid medications may be required such as Pantoprazole or Ranitidine. In cases of severe pain, the diagnosis should be established with endoscopic tests which include gastroscopy or barium swallow test.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
 Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
