What Does Diffuse Increase In Echogenicity On An Ultrasound Report Indicate?

In my ultrasound of abdomen and pelvis report, it says increased in liver size(159mm) and shows diffuse increase in echogenicity, no focal pathology seen. There is no evidence of intra hepatic biliary dilation. Can and portal vein appear normal. Please clarify me what is the issue

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The liver is increased in size according to the ultrasound, the increase is a general increase meaning that there is no distinct mass causing it to be bigger.

There is no evidence of any of the bile ducts of the liver being blocked (no evidence of intrahepatic biliary dilation). The portal vein in the liver which is a large vein is also normal in appearance.

A general increase in liver size may be due to infection or trauma. You may need blood tests such as liver function tests and a hepatitis profile.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
