What Does Discoloration On The Toe Indicate?

I noticed a discoloration on the tip of my longest toe. I suspected it was a result of a pinch or injury; however, I don’t recall either. I have Raynaud’s Phenomenon and suspect it might be related. A second similar spot has appeared on the longest toe of my other foot. I reside in a cold, Midwestern climate. My fingers, tip of my ears and nose also are susceptible to discoloration, blood loss, stinging, etc., with exposure. The toe issue feels like a blister and is uncomfortable. I am able to arm the extremities with warm water, but this provides only temporary relief of the symptoms.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The discoloration is related with Raynaud's phenomenom , which happens from initial blood-vessel narrowing due to spasm of the tiny muscles in the wall of the vessels, followed by sudden opening and is more possible to happen in cold weather.
You can prevent the spasm of the blood vessels by protecting the fingers and the toes from cold, trauma, and infection.
If your symptoms are persistent you can use diltiazem, or nifedipine that are calcium antagonists( used as an antihypertensive therapy), and cause blood vessels dilatation.You can also use aspirine that is an antiagregant.
Avoid using beta blockers as atenolol, metoprolol (used as an antihypertensive treatment), because they worsen the Raynaud's Phenomena.
