What Does Ear Wax With Dabs Of Blood In 5 Year Old Child Imply?

My son is Autistic and liked to put foreign objects in his ears when he was two and had many problems with ear infections. He is now five, and this strange habit started up again a few weeks ago right about the time he was diagnosed with an ear infection. My son had a large buildup of hard wax in his ear, and I thought perhaps relieving him of the annoyance might stop the behavior. while he was sleeping I did manage to work the hard wax out of his ear, but I was very concerned when he started crying, the hard wax was the size of my not so dainty pinkie nail, and the end of the tear drop shaped ball of wax appeared to have been made up partly of blood and there were a few dabs of blood of the Q Tip that I used to clean up any exes from the area just in side the canal.

Hi,

Noted that your son is autistic, history of putting in foreign bodies, you have removed the wax but caused pain and was blood tinged.
When the wax get hardened the last layer of it is the dying layer of skin and thus if removed forcefully can cause the layer to peal off causing pain and bleeding.
Hence do not worry if there is no active bleeding and the pain settled.
It is always better to get examined by an ENT Surgeon to be sure about no injury or perforation of the tympanic membrane.
Do not remove the wax yourself from next time.
Do not put any ear drops till seen by a Doctor, preferably an ENT Surgeon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT and General Surgeon
