What Does Elevated Protein Levels In The Spinal Fluid Indicate?
I recently had a lumbar puncture. The doctor advised that it revealed I have extremely high levels on protein in my spine fluid. In October, 2014, I walked in for lower back surgery, was under anesthesia for 5 days amd have not walked since. What does the high protein lever (8.7) indicate ?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Varinder's Response
Hi,
High protein level indicates injury or inflammation or blockage to fluid. As you are not mobile, you may have developed obstruction in free flow of CSF in your spine.
I will recommend MRI brain and spine and complete lab tests to rule out any infection, etcetera.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Varinder Joshi
