My recent tests have shown low folic acid, ultrasound enlarged ovary and thick endometrial wall, possibly cysts in ovary but my doctor will not tell me possibilities of what this means?
General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
Enlarged ovary with thickened endometrium represents Absence of ovulation... the accumulation of no ovulated follicular cysts in ovary causes enlarged ovaries. In the same way, increased estrogen in the blood causes thickened endometrium as it cannot be shed off due to the absence of ovulation... leading to lack of progesterone (which causes ovulation & starts menstruation on depletion of progesterone).
Thus enlarged ovary causes pain in abdomen & thickened endometrium. Treatment of the condition helps in getting normal ovulating periods.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale,
