What Does Flickering Sensation In The Left Eye Indicate?

Three or four times over the past week, I have had this sensation of a flickering (colorless) in my line of vision in left eye which last only a second or two and then goes away. It s not a flashing light-just colorless like a small lightening bolt which flashes in my line of vision for just two or three seconds and then goes away. There is no pain or anything.
