What Does High Iron Level In My Blood Report Suggest?
I m 71 years old and on Tue., had a colonoscopy, Wed a doctors appointment followed by a chest x-ray, Thurs. numerous blood tests, Fri. follow up appointment indicated high iron levels and low red blood cells. He recommended b-12 for the blood but couldn t explain the high Fe as most people are low. Any explanation would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Bob

High iron levels is usually seen in anemia of chronic disease. Its a condition in which iron are present, but the body is not able to use it. Another condition would be sideroblastic anemia. Ask him to get a peripheral smear done and evaluate for sideroblasts in red blood cells. 3. B12 deficiency can also explain anemia. However, high iron levels are not usually seen. Hope it helps.
