What Does Lowering HCG Levels And Absence Of Bleeding Indicate?

My sister missed her period by a week. Shes had 3 hcg levels drawn, first was around 60, second was 161 and then it dropped to 106. She had another drawn today and it was 63. She is wondering why her hcg level is dropping and shes not bleeding? She assumes shes having a misscarriage but wondering why shes not having any vaginal bleeding.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome.

Yes, a miscarriage is most certainly a possibility. But to confirm this as she is not experiencing any symptoms of vaginal bleeding, she needs to visit a doctor for an ultrasound examination.

This will confirm the presence of a gestational sac, but possibly the absence of the fetus. The cause for the absemce of bleeding can then be identified using a transvaginal ultrasound scan.

Best wishes.
