What Does Metallic Taste And Chesty Cough Suggest?

I ve been suffering with Allergies...sneezing, itchy/watery eyes, which has cleared up, but my sinus membranes are constantly swelling up and so I ve been using nose spray that has the Oxymetazoline in it...its the only way I can sleep. Although, this morning I woke up with a headache and now I ve got this chesty cough and get this metallic taste and just feel, not well. Could it still be allergies, side effect of nose spray, or something else? Laura

Hello,

Cough is seen in allergic airways apart from infection. As you don't have any fever, we can rule out infection. Oxymetazoline spray is not to be used on a long term basis as it may cause Rhinitis medicamentosa (RM), also known as 'rebound congestion' is inflammation of the nasal mucosa caused by the overuse of topical nasal decongestants.

My recommendations are as follows:
1) Tab. Sinarest for 3 days
2)Tab. Cetirizine for 3 days
3) Steam inhalation daily once for 3 days
4) Metallic taste is usually seen in viral infections. If you have fever with metallic taste of tongue, you may need to take tab. Paracetamol.
If your symptoms persist, please do consult a physician for further evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,

General & Family Physician Dr. Priyanka's  Response
Hello,

A metallic taste in the mouth and chesty cough can be associated with a few different conditions. Here are some possibilities:
* Side effect of Oxymetazoline: Nasal sprays containing oxymetazoline can cause side effects such as headache, metallic taste, and cough. These side effects are generally not serious, but it's best to talk to your doctor if you are concerned.
* Sinus infection: A sinus infection can cause a metallic taste in the mouth, as well as post-nasal drip and a cough. Headache is also a common symptom of sinusitis.
* Acid reflux: Acid reflux can cause a sour or metallic taste in the mouth, as well as a cough. It occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing irritation and inflammation.

It's best to talk to your doctor about your symptoms to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
