What Does My MRI Scan Report Indicate?

There are minimal scattered foci of T2 and FLAIR hyperintensities involving the peri- ventricular and subcortical white matter, which is non specific but is likely related to chronic small vessel ischemic changes. The previous statement was on my most recent MRI what does it mean?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The MRI scan report suggests that there are small areas of increased signal intensity on T2-weighted and FLAIR images within the peri-ventricular (around the ventricles) and subcortical (under the cortex) a white matter of the brain. These changes are not specific to any particular disease but are likely to be due to chronic small vessel ischemic changes, which means damage to small blood vessels in the brain. This type of damage is often seen in older adults and can be caused by factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and other medical conditions.

It is important to note that while these changes are common and often associated with aging, they can also be associated with an increased risk of stroke and dementia. Your doctor may recommend further evaluation and management of risk factors to help reduce the risk of these complications.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
