What Does My MRI Scan Report Indicate?

I have headaches daily after I had an cranial injury and staples in my scalp... Have had an MRI and it indicated I have mucosal thickening in the paranasal sinuses... Should I just take over the counter sinus medications for this or is there something, requiring a prescription that I could get from my MD???? Mildred Simmons ... YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You had MRI scan done and it shows mucosal thickening in the paranasal sinuses. You have not mentioned the degree of mucosal thickening shown on your MRI. Mucosal thickening of up to 3 mm lacks clinical significance in asymptomatic patients. 1- to 2-mm areas of mucosal thickening in the ethmoidal sinuses occur in 63% of asymptomatic patients. This minimal mucosal thickening in the ethmoidal sinuses is considered to be normal, possibly a function of the physiologic nasal cycle.

Chronic symptomatic patients however need treatment. Acute sinusitis is commonly treated with analgesics, decongests and antihistamines, steam inhalation and nasal sprays (Otrivin nasal spray) to prevent blockage. You are suggested to continue to take your prescription medications given by your treating doctor.

Chronic symptomatic patients may be recommended a course of antibiotics (amoxycillin-500 thrice daily for 10 days) along with the other medicines for symptomatic relieve. Consult your treating doctor before taking medicines. Surgery is only suggested if the patients do not show any response to treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
