Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi Doctor! I had an MRI for an unrelated issue and the radiologist came back and said I have a lymphnode in my chest cavity near the thoracic inlet that is 11.4 X 17.9 cm. The report said I also had inumerable other enlarged lymphnodes in the area. He told me to see an oncologist which I got an appointment on 9/19. I had some bloodwork done but not all of it is back yet. My RDW was 17.5 and my platelet count was 484. Is this suggestive of possible lymphoma or leukemia? Carrie
An increased RDW in peripheral blood smears may be associated with iron deficiency, vitamin B12, or folic acid deficiency, and Hb deficiency; hemolysis or blood transfusion can also cause an elevated RDW.
Recent studies have also confirmed that RDW plays an important role in lung cancer. Your platelet count is normal. Leukemias and lymphomas are diagnosed when TLC and neutrophil count and lymphocyte count are abnormal. Thoracic lymphadenopathy may be because of multiple reasons and malignancy is one of them.
You would need further work up like bronchoscopy, mediastinoscopy, lymph node biopsy, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy for a conclusive diagnosis.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
