Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a been diagnosed with a gene mutation (JAK2) associated with myeloproliferative neoplasms. I am awaiting the results of a bone marrow biopsy to find out if I have polycythemia vera or essential thrombocythemia. I was reading that low Sed rate is associated with polycythemia. My Automated Sedimentation Rate in May was 1 MM/HR. But with a normal range of 0-25, does that really tell us anything? How can a Sed rate be low when 0 is in the normal range?
* The ESR depends upon the sedimentation of the red blood cells in lab preparation of precipitate as done by Sahleys method.
* It is the response of the body to auto immune disorders of various types and the management requires that of very high ESR, but low ESR does not require active medical management without symptoms.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
