What Does My Radiology Report Mean?

I went and got a copy of my radiology report from an ER visit on Dec 29, 2014. I did this because not only did I have Type A influenza diagnosis, but possible pneumonia. What is possible pneumonia? No answer needed for that, but my concern was if it wasn t pneumonia, what is it? This is the exact quote from the report: IMPRESSION: Small pleural effusions with overlying bibasilar atelectasis and/or pneumonia. I have asthma. Also: since this visit, i wheeze most of the time. I am just looking for an explanation of the quote. Thank you, JoAnn

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

Pneumonias can have many different patterns on X ray chest findings.

Your X rays findings are explained below

1. Small amount of fluid collection is noted in the chest cavities with both the lungs showing areas of collapse and consolidation involving the lower lobes.

2. This means you had a significant pneumonia picture on X ray and this can certainly be due to influenza A which is a viral pneumonia.

3. The X ray findings will not tell the exact organism causing pneumonia in every patient but there are certain types of pneumonia that have a typical picture on X ray.

4. Your X ray chest does not pin pont to any particular type of pneumonia but is frequently associated with vial influenza type A.

In conclusion, you did have a pneumonia in the month of December 2014 and your X ray confirms it.
