Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Does My Vaginal Ultrasound Scan Report Indicate?
I am 26 years old and have never had children. I had the Paragard IUD inserted about 6 1/2 hours ago and have been in constant agonizing pain ever since. My doctor did a vaginal ultrasound after the procedure to ensure that it the device was in good position and everything looked fine (with the exception of one of the arms not opening up as it should have). She prescribed me some Vicodin for pain management and told me that it would likely get better within a few hours. The cramping feeling/discomfort is constant and I am at a 7-8 on the pain scale even with the Vicodin. Is this typical? Any thoughts? The clinic is closed until Monday and I m trying to avoid an expensive ER visit if possible.
Based on the history you have shared, it can be a normal response after the procedure, if you never had it before but not opening the arm and pain at scale of 7 is too much for that.
Any local trauma, or even local allergic reaction to the inserted device or even pressure effect caused by unopened arm to stretch itself may be causing the pain.
Its better to remove it and re-insert another one after few days once pain settles.

If pain is severe more potent analgesic like Tramadol or Gabapentin may be helpful. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
