What Does Neck Scan Findings For Difficulty In Talking Loud Indicate?

my husband has been not able to talk clearly and his voice sound is low but he does not have any problem while swallowing food. When showed to an ENT doc he asked to take scan of neck(plain & contrast) in technique: Serial axial 0.625mm sections were taken without and with contrast, coronal and sagittal reformations were done. Findings: Nasopharygeal airway appears normal. Oro and hypo pharyngeal airway appear normal. Pyriform sinuses appear normal. Both vocal cords, supra and sub glottic spaces appear normal. Parapharyngeal and para laryngeal spaces appear normal. Paratid and sub mandibular glands appear normal. No cervical lympahdenopathy noted.Impression: No laryngeal or pharyngeal mass lesion. No enlarged neck nodes. was the result but still my husband has to clear his throat to make his voice clear and is heard in very low volume. Please suggest what has to be done. and what may be his problem?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The scan report is necessarily normal as you can also note, everything being reported as normal.
A scan can detect something that is like a cyst, lump or inflammation.

Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation:
He needs to be subjected for Direct laryngo-pharyngoscopy to know the actual finding that a scan can not show in any case.
This will give a probable and proper diagnosis so that appropriate management can be done.

If there is any swelling of the vocal cords proper medical management with anti-inflammatory and oral steroid can help.
If there is a polyp or so then a laser surgery may be needed if the medical management fails.

Voice rest for a week is very important.
No smoking, pollution free area stay is also needed.

I hope this answer helps you. Let me know if I can assist you further.
