What Does Nose Bleeding In Children Suggest?

Hi, I am a teacher and a parent let me know that her child s eardrum was ruptured by a q - tip. She was seen by the Dr. and has returned back to school and seems to be doing fine. I am concerned though, because blood has been coming out of her nose when she get excited. Why is that happening?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history about your student having nosebleed, her parent telling that there was q-tip injury to the ear drum as said by her Doctor.
Well, nosebleed may not be related to the ear injury by q-tip.
The cause may be local in the nose like inflammation at the front portion of nasal septum called Little's area and is common in children due to nose-pricking habit.
Observe the child for nose pricking habit.
Other cause of nose bleed in children are related to some tumors, Vascular anomaly, and needs to be confirmed by ENT Surgeon on Endoscopy of nose, ear and throat. This will also help to know the status of the injured ear, the extent and the need of any additional treatment.
Once the cause is found for nose bleed it will be treated as per the cause found.Till then ask the parent to get the final diagnosis and management and then only to attend the school.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
